Raelee Calhoun — who goes by Dixie Deadshot on the music side and lives with three outstanding warrants on the legal side — is the sixth-generation heir of Calhoun women to hold the Pike County Thinning. Three things break at once: a veiled threat to June is Kokabiel's last straw after 70 years of patient watching. His surge of righteous anger emits a precise frequency. The frequency acts as a spotlight, letting the waking Horde members find and destroy the wrongness. The Archive corrects — Kokabiel never lost belief or trust in June, even when the corridor did, and his unbroken belief is the incorruptible witness the record needed.

Asbeel (Grigori's oldest dissenter) is confirmed as the correct Watcher for the defecting-enforcer role in this book — locked canon.

December. The Thinning is fracturing and Dixie has a second album out and a third half-built and is the reason five Watcher-witch partnerships are holding the door together. Mama Calhoun at the dinner table: "I have been holding this door for fifty-three years. The holding was the waiting. The waiting was for the configuration that made the opening possible. You're the configuration."
