[Spoken, rhythmic — no beat, just voice]
Raelee Calhoun.
Pike County born, Pike County registered,
Pike County courthouse knows my name in cursive.
Three warrants.
Two moving violations — let's be honest, one of those
was the highway patrol on a bad Tuesday morning,
and one was me driving the way I drive
on roads I know.
One misdemeanor.
Reduced from something larger.
I said something at a county board meeting
that a county commissioner
didn't appreciate,
in front of his wife,
and I want the record to show
I said it because it was true
and I'd say it again.
That's the table.
That's what you're walking into.
Raelee Calhoun.
Deadshot.
Pike County.
Three warrants.
None of them wrong.

TRACK 01 / 11 · Intro / Ambient / Spoken
[No beat. Field recording — creek water, wind in ridge trees. Voice enters slowly.]
Route 119 is a state road.
It runs through Pike County, Kentucky,
which is in the southeastern corner of the state,
which is in the Appalachian coalfields,
which is in the oldest mountain range in the world.
The road is two lanes.
The road follows the creek.
In most places the creek is close enough
that you can hear it with the window down.
The ruts are bad in spring.
The curves are tight at the county line.
The shoulder disappears in three or four places
where the ridge comes down to the road's edge
and the road just has to accommodate it.
I've driven this road at every hour.
Coming home from gigs at two AM
with the gas light on and the crack in the windshield
catching the headlights wrong.
Going out at six AM in February
when the fog sits in the hollow
and the road disappears into it
ten yards ahead of you.
I was born in a county that has this road in it.
My grandmother was born in a county that has this road in it.
Her grandmother was born in a county
before the road was formally a road.
The creek was here first.
The road follows the creek
because the creek knew where to go
and we had the sense to follow.
[The creek sound rises. Holds. Then a beat comes in underneath it — low, patient.]
This is an album about this place.
Not about what I think of this place.
About what this place actually is.
I'm going to try to get it right.

[Drops cold. No intro. Hard beat — banjo plucked like a hi-hat, bass underneath.]
[Verse 1]
no introduction, you already know the name
Deadshot, Pike County, I don't repeat myself
three records deep, I don't explain myself
if you missed the first two that's a you problem
I came up in a county they wrote off for dead
made a genre out of what they said couldn't be made
banjo on the one, trap on the two and four
and a voice that's been told to be quiet since the fourth grade
I am not being quiet
I have never been quiet
quiet is a thing they ask of women who are right
so the room can stay comfortable
I am not in the comfort business
[Hook]
Deadshot
I hit what I aim at
Deadshot
I aim at what I mean
you can call it whatever lane you want
I built the lane
I'm the only one in it
Deadshot
[Verse 2]
they want the Appalachian girl to play the part
the sad ballad, the front porch, the dying town
I'll give you the dying town, but not the way you want it
I'll give it to you over a beat that doesn't quit
because the town isn't dying the way the magazines say
the town is doing what towns do when the money leaves
which is hold, and adapt, and keep the diner open
and raise the kids that the school board tried to fail
I'm the kid the school board tried to fail
I'm the orchestra they cut in 2009
I'm the after-school program they locked on Wednesdays
I'm what they didn't fund, making noise anyway
[Hook]
Deadshot
I hit what I aim at
Deadshot
I aim at what I mean
you can call it whatever lane you want

Deadshot
[Bridge]
the first album was me telling you who I am
the second album was me telling you where I'm from
this album is me done telling you anything
this album is me just doing it
the explaining is over
the proving is over
what's left is the work
and the work hits
[Outro]

that's the whole thing
that's the entire statement

[Sparse beat. Lots of space. The production reflects the subject.]
[Hook]
forty-seven dollars
and some change I know to the cent
that's the number I built a career on top of
forty-seven dollars
[Verse 1]
this is not a poverty album, exactly
this is an album about the math of it
the specific arithmetic of making something
when the account says forty-seven dollars
forty-seven dollars in October of the worst year
gas to the Friday gig comes out of it
the studio session if I want it comes out of it
the thing I told Mama I'd get her comes out of it
and there isn't room for all three
so you learn to prioritize at the level of the gallon
you learn that a tank of gas is a unit of opportunity
you learn the difference between need and want
is sometimes just the difference between this week and next
[Pre-Hook]
I'm not telling you this for sympathy
I'm telling you this because it's the foundation
the music got built on top of forty-seven dollars
and you should know what the foundation was
[Hook]
forty-seven dollars
and some change I know to the cent
that's the number I built a career on top of
forty-seven dollars
[Verse 2]
there's a thing that happens to your brain on that little
every purchase becomes a calculation
every dollar has three jobs and can only do one
and the choosing is constant, the choosing never stops
some people romanticize it after they're out
talk about how it taught them what matters
and I'll grant that it taught me the math
but it didn't teach me anything I'd recommend the class for
what forty-seven dollars taught me
is that I could make a record on forty-seven dollars
not because forty-seven dollars is enough
but because I was going to make it regardless
and the account didn't get a vote
[Hook]
forty-seven dollars
and some change I know to the cent
that's the number I built a career on top of

[Acoustic. Strings enter. The most tender opening on any of the records.]
[Hook]
Mama Calhoun, seventy-three years old
thirty-seven years of work in her hands
she taught me everything I know about holding
and most of what I know about letting go
[Verse 1]
I call her Mama Calhoun, the whole county does
to me she's also Nana, in the kitchen, just us
two names for the same woman, two registers
the public one and the one that's only mine
she raised me when my mother left
she didn't make a thing of it, she just did it
set another place at the table, the ninety-year-old table
and that was the whole announcement that my life had changed
she is not a soft woman, I want that clear
softness is not what she had to offer and not what I needed
what she had was steadiness, the immovable kind
the kind you can build a childhood on top of
[Pre-Hook]
she never told me she was proud in those words
she told me by leaving the kitchen light on
she told me by being up when I came home late
she told me by asking if I wanted coffee
which in her language is the whole speech
[Hook]
Mama Calhoun, seventy-three years old
thirty-seven years of work in her hands
she taught me everything I know about holding
and most of what I know about letting go
[Verse 2]
the county thinks of her as the one who keeps the records
the local history, the way things used to be
she's got notebooks, decades of them, the whole archive
of a place that doesn't always write itself down
and she is that, she's the keeper of the county's memory
but to me she's the woman who taught me to take roads
who told me at six and sixteen and twenty-two
that you go find out or you wonder forever
everything I've done, every road I took
came from a thing she said to me in this kitchen
at this table, which has been here since forty-three
over coffee, in the language she actually speaks
[Bridge]
she's seventy-three now and she moves a little slower
and I notice, the way you notice the people you love
getting older in increments too small to name
until one day the increments add up to a number
and I'm making this album partly because I noticed
because I want it on the record who she is
while she's here to hear it, while she can sit at the table
and hear her granddaughter say it out loud
which I never do out loud, in person
because that's not how we talk, we talk in coffee
so I'm saying it in a song instead, which she'll allow
because a song is just a coffee that lasts longer
[Hook]
Mama Calhoun, seventy-three years old

TRACK 01 / 10 · Rap
[The album breathes differently. Wider production. Movement in it.]
[Hook]
there's the direct route and there's the long way home
and I have always, always taken the long way home
the Calhoun women don't go straight at anything
we take the road that takes longer and shows us more
[Verse 1]
third record did the thing, the breakthrough thing
the numbers crossed over, the rooms got bigger
and suddenly there's a tour, an actual tour
counties I've never played, states I've never been
and the thing about a tour is it's all roads
and I've got a relationship with roads, I've had it my whole life
so this album is the road album, the touring album
the one I made while I was actually in motion
some of these tracks were written in the truck
some in green rooms in towns I can barely name
some in hotel rooms, the cheap ones, on the way to somewhere
this album moves because I was moving when I made it
[Pre-Hook]
and every road, no matter how far it takes me
is a road that eventually points back to 119
because the long way home is still the way home
long just means it shows you things first
[Hook]
there's the direct route and there's the long way home
and I have always, always taken the long way home
the Calhoun women don't go straight at anything
we take the road that takes longer and shows us more
[Verse 2]
the breakthrough is a strange thing when it finally comes
you spend years driving on the gas light wanting it
and then it arrives and it's not what you pictured
it's more roads, more nights, more towns, more away
the dream was always vague, the dream was just bigger
and bigger turned out to mean farther from the table
farther from the kitchen, farther from the creek
the breakthrough is a long way from home, that's the catch
but I took the long way on purpose, I always do
and the long way home is still a way home
every town I play, I'm playing toward the county
every road points back, even when it points away
[Hook]
there's the direct route and there's the long way home
and I have always, always taken the long way home
the Calhoun women don't go straight at anything
we take the road that takes longer and shows us more

TRACK 01 / 10 · Acoustic Rap
[The quietest opening of the discography. Space. Patience. Almost nothing.]
[Hook]
it's a Tuesday and nothing happened
and I want to tell you how good that is
after the years of everything happening
a Tuesday where nothing happens is the whole reward
[Verse 1]
I spent a decade where every day was a crisis
the gas light, the forty-seven dollars, the deadlines
the gigs, the warrants, the album that wouldn't finish
three weeks from the next emergency, always, for years
and then the records did the thing, and the touring happened
and that was a different kind of everything, the breakthrough kind
the bigger rooms, the offer, the no, the road, the reach
still everything, still constant, still no Tuesdays
and now, finally, I'm home, and it's a Tuesday
and nothing is happening, and nothing needs to happen
the records are made, the county's here, the creek is running
and I'm sitting in the kitchen and it's just a Tuesday
[Pre-Hook]
this is the hardest album to explain to a label
what's it about, they'd ask, and I'd say: a Tuesday
about what Tuesday feels like when everything's permanent
about nothing happening, on purpose, finally
[Hook]
it's a Tuesday and nothing happened
and I want to tell you how good that is
after the years of everything happening
a Tuesday where nothing happens is the whole reward
[Verse 2]
the production on this album is mostly space
I pulled almost everything out, left almost nothing in
because the album is about the nothing, the good nothing
and you can't make an album about quiet that isn't quiet
the loud album was Deadshot, the loud album proved the point
this album doesn't have a point to prove, that's the point
this album is what's left when the proving is done
when the crisis is over and the Tuesday finally comes
some people won't get it, the quiet, the nothing
they'll want the gas-light drama, the board-meeting fight
and that stuff was real and I made the records about it
but this is real too, the Tuesday, the permanent quiet
and it might be the realest thing I've made
[Hook]
it's a Tuesday and nothing happened
and I want to tell you how good that is
after the years of everything happening
a Tuesday where nothing happens is the whole reward
